The SUA Botanical Garden begins with the preparation of biodiversity meadows
27.06.2023
The SUA Botanical Garden is starting to prepare biodiversity meadows on an area of two hectares as part of the BIO:VCEL:IN project. In the next few days, it will begin the mechanical processing of the soil and plans to have a complete foundation by the end of 2023.
It will be possible thanks to a grant of 14,000 euros from the Slovenská sporiteľna Foundation. On May 30, representatives of the Botanical Garden took part in the grant awarding ceremony. The project follows the long-term philosophy of the SUA, which is sustainability. "The goal is to support the biodiversity of the environment, pollinators and ensure ecosystem services, which the intensively mowed lawn does not offer," said the Director of the SUA Botanical Garden, Alica Beňová. The secondary aim is to reduce the number of mowings, the use of mechanization and human resources. Last but not least, the flower meadows will also fulfill an aesthetic function.
The employees of the SUA Botanical Garden will try different ways of establishing biodiversity meadows. In addition, it will also be a form of seeding with different types of mixtures and with different seeding volumes. "I would like to ask my colleagues from the SUA to be patient, because a total herbicide must be used on some areas, so the area will be fenced off," noted A. Beňová. Meadow areas will be used for teaching at the faculties of our Green University, but also for organizing educational seminars, education and research. Public tours are also planned for the future. "Our intention is to spread the idea of sustainability and support of environmental biodiversity to the public as well. Flower meadows are a topic that is currently in great demand, and experts - be they landscape architects, implementers, gardeners, representatives of municipalities or ecologists, but also ordinary users of gardens, have many questions on the topic, to which they would receive real answers directly in terrain with visual evaluation and comparison," added A. Beňová.
