The Rector SPU Dr.h.c. prof. Ing. Peter Bielik, PhD., welcomed the Ambassador of SR to Brazil Milan Cigáň on December 16, 2014. The main objective of the negotiation was to discuss the mechanism of an action, and the possibilities of starting up and creating the conditions for a cooperation with the Brazilian universities and research institutions within the “Science without Borders” programme initiated and fully paid by the Brazilian federal government since 2011.
M. Cigáň stated that the programme mediates a unique opportunity also for Slovak research centres and universities to develop mutually beneficial cooperation. Within this cooperation the Brazilian students, pedagogues and the scientists have the opportunities to gain new skills and knowledge in the Slovak Republic, and vice-versa the Slovak ones in Brazil.
“The Brazilian government has the interest to send 100 thousand of its students to foreign universities – mainly with technical and natural orientations. The target was fulfilled by 60% in the first stage and it is considered as successful. These opportunities have been already used by Hungarian universities where there are currently 2000 of Brazilian students or Polish universities with 300 students from Brazil. Until now Slovak universities and research institutions have not been able to use these opportunities. Currently the second stage of the programme is implemented. The universities which are interested in cooperation have to specify the fields of cooperation and sign the agreements,” said the Ambassador.
Rector prof. Peter Bielik stated that the SUA is able to offer the cooperation with Brazilian universities and institutes in the field of agriculture, biotechnology, agronomy, food industry, engineering and technology, but also in other areas. “We would like to implement the common programmes, common research, for example within the Horizon 2020 programme as well as the cooperation with the researchers in the project Building of Research Centre “AgroBioTech” at the SUA, “he said.
At the end of the meeting, the Ambassador M. Cigáň promised to guarantee the cooperation of the SUA with selected Brazilian institutions in above mentioned fields.
