New possibilities of cooperation with Cuba

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Loipa Sánchez Lorenzo visited the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra on 22 May. She was welcomed by the University Rector Dr.h.c. prof. Ing. Peter Bielik, PhD., and Vice-rector for International and Public Relations prof. Dr. Ing. Elena Horská. The main purpose of the meeting was to start intensive mutual cooperation in education, science and research, mobility of teachers and students.

In the beginning of the meeting the Cuban ambassador who has held her position since November 2011 and her priority is the development of cooperation with universities, informed about the history of cooperation between Cuban and Slovak universities. Among them, as stated there is the University of Economics in Bratislava, University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, but also partner universities in neighbouring countries – the University of Miskolc in Hungary, Otto von Guerricke University of Magdeburg in Germany, and universities in the Netherlands and the UK. Subsequently Her Excellence expressed her intention to involve the largest Cuban universities in research and cultivation of wheat crop in tropical conditions, which is implemented by SUA in partnership with the Osivo Zvolen company. The Agrobiotech research centre at SUA was also of interest of Mrs. Ambassador. Rector prof. Peter. Bielik informed in detail about the focus of work to promote applied research in the field of agro-biology, biotechnology, agricultural technology, and food and bio-energy.
SUA representatives were also informed that Latin America's largest international congress focused on cooperation between universities will be held in Havana, Cuba´s capital in February next year.
