The Rural University of the Third Age continues – this time in Heľpa

For over 30 years, the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra has offered lifelong learning through its University of the Third Age program. This year, 41 seniors are completing the course.
In 2013, limited access to education for seniors in rural areas led to the creation of a unique project — the Rural University of the Third Age. Its goal was to bring educational opportunities directly to rural communities. The pilot program began in 2015 in several regions, and until the pandemic, it was successfully run in the village of Rastislavice.
This year, the village of Heľpa reached out to the university, expressing interest in joining the program. The university responded positively, and classes began in May, organized by the Institute of Marketing, Trade and Social Studies in cooperation with the University Counseling and Support Center. At the first session, Associate Professor Danka Moravčíková, the program manager, introduced the university, the project, and the structure of the learning process. The 41 enrolled seniors were informed about the course schedule, organization, and learning materials.
During the program cycle, participants could choose four topics:
- Diseases and Prevention
- Law for Seniors
- Fraud and How to Protect Against It
- Gardening I
The first round of classes was held in three groups and ended in July. The program will conclude traditionally at SUA in Nitra in September, where participants will receive certificates of completion.
“We’re very pleased with the positive feedback and the fact that all participants were satisfied and gained valuable knowledge while spending time with friends,” said Danka Moravčíková.
