In Slovakia, the origins of higher education in the agricultural sciences are connected with the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, where the first Department of Forestry and Agricultural Engineering was established. First agriculture-oriented lectures were offered in the 1941/42 academic year. In 1946, based on this Department, the Slovak National Council founded an independent university - the University of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering in Kosice. An important milestone in the history of the Slovak agricultural higher education, was the year 1952. In this year, as part of the reorganization of universities, the Government separated two faculties of the University in Kosice into two independent universities: the University of Agriculture in Nitra and the University of Forestry in Zvolen. At the beginning, the University of Agriculture organized studies in two specializations - agronomy and animal production, offered by two faculties: Faculty of Agronomy and Faculty of Animal Sciences. In 1959, the latter merged into the Faculty of Agronomy, and another new Faculty of Economics and Management was founded. Ten years later, the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering was established. The Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering, the creation of which was approved by the Accreditation Committee of the Slovak Government in March 1995. The newest two faculties are the Faculty of Agrobiology and Food Resources and the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, which were created in September 2002 by dividing of the former Faculty of Agronomy. From the beginning to present- date, 32,500 undergraduate students have earned their Master of Science in Agriculture degree. Due to the multifunctional structure of curricula, students could find jobs not only in diverse fields of agriculture but also in other sectors of the national economy. In 1996, the name of the University was changed to the Slovak Agricultural University (SPU) in accordance with the Law No. 324/1996 Coll., passed by the National Council of the Slovak Republic. After a half century
of its existence, and being the only institution of its kind in Slovakia,
the Slovak Agricultural University has acquired a leading position in
the system of higher learning. Slovak Agricultural
University in Nitra (SAU) has a special position among 21 Slovakian
